🌕 The Significance of Karwa Chauth – A Sacred Festival of Devotion

India is known for its rich traditions, culture, and spiritual festivals. Among these, Karwa Chauth holds a special place. Celebrated every year on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, this festival is observed by married women who fast for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of their husbands.

🌸 Meaning of Karwa Chauth

The word “Karwa” refers to a small earthen pot, and “Chauth” means the fourth day. On this day, women fill the Karwa (pot) with water, worship it with devotion, and later break their fast only after sighting the moon at night.

🙏 The Legend of Karwa Chauth

According to an ancient story, there once lived a queen named Veeravati. She observed a strict fast for her husband’s long life. However, due to her brothers’ trickery, she was misled into breaking the fast before moonrise. As a result, her husband passed away. Later, with the blessings of Goddess Parvati, her husband regained life. Since then, women have been observing this fast with utmost faith and devotion.

🌕 The Rituals of Karwa Chauth

1. Morning (Sargi): The fast begins before sunrise with a meal called Sargi, given by the mother-in-law.


2. Prayer & Story: Women observe a waterless (nirjala) fast throughout the day and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha (legend) in the evening.


3. Moon Sighting: At night, when the moon rises, women see the moon through a sieve and then look at their husbands.


4. Breaking the Fast: The fast ends when the husband offers the first sip of water and the first bite of food to his wife.
